Kai Iwi Lakes is located north of Dargaville in the North Island of New Zealand. These lakes were formed during the Pleistocene Epoch. Rainwater accumulated in the sand forming the lakes, while ironstone underneath stopped the water from escaping. All of the lakes have white sand beaches with shallow areas perfect for swimming. The lake is also home to trout and you will often see fishermen and women, sailors and boaties using the lakes for fun.
Kai Iwi Lakes is often overlooked by many tourists, but for Kiwis (New Zealanders) this is a summer favourite. Nestled in the bush it’s the perfect getaway for Aucklanders and those living up north. We recently took our rooftop tent to visit this stunning area and had a blast. So here is everything you need to know about visiting Kai Iwi Lakes.
HOW TO GET TO KAI IWI LAKES
Due to the remote location of these lakes, there aren’t any public transport options that will take you directly there. You will need to drive yourself or hire a car. Kai Iwi Lakes is located 211 kilometres from Auckland (about a 2 hours 45-minute drive)
One of the best ways to travel to New Zealand is with a campervan, as this gives you the freedom to reach locations around the country and stay in beautiful destinations. For hire a campervan the cheapest option is Jucy. They offer many options suited to your needs and would be perfect for a getaway to the Lakes. For more campervan options try Maui and for more unique campervans try Indie Campers or Camplify.
WHEN TO VISIT
Kai Iwi Lakes has a mild climate with an average temperature of 18°C. Throughout the year, you can expect the average monthly temperatures to fluctuate between 13°C and 22°C, but in summer the temperature can be much higher.
The best times to visit is from January to March and in November. During these months, you’ll experience warmer temperatures and less rainfall. I would personally recommend visiting in summer as it will be hot with sunny days and blue skies, which is perfect for taking a dip in the cool lakes.
WHERE TO STAY
Kai Iwi Lakes is small so there isn’t a large number of accommodation options and they do full up quickly in summer. However, there is a range in terms of budget from camping grounds to resorts and glamping. Here are my recommendations:
- Camping ($): There are two options for camping, Pine Beach and Promenade Point. Make sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
- Kai Iwi Lakes resort ($$): options rangning from $120 to $370 NZD per night.
- Canopy Camping ($$): For those looking for something a bit more unique and scheduled.
- The Lakes Retreat ($$$): for those looking for a bit more luxury, with four boutique lodges to choose from.
MUST SEE AND DOS
Kai Iwi Lakes is the perfect place for relaxation right near the water, while also offering some activities for those looking for a more adventure-packed holiday.
On the Water
The crystal-clear waters of the lakes are perfect for those who want to paddleboard, kayak, swim or take the boat out for some wakeboarding. You will find fellow Kiwis and tourists windsurfing, water-skiing, rowing, fishing, and sailing. Each body of water has its own set of rules: Lake Kai Iwi allows only non-motorised vessels, while Lake Taharoa is designated for swimming only. There are many activities you can do on the lakes, but just remember to be mindful of others in the water especially if you are boating or jet skiing.
Biking
The lake’s edges offer serene trails perfect for new riders and seasoned cyclists. These picturesque paths offer stunning views of the Lakes and the surrounding bush. The gentle terrain and well-maintained tracks ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Walking
Lake Taharoa’s loop track traces the azure blue water lapping at the shore’s edge with soft white sand underfoot. Ideal for families, this 8km trail takes around two hours to complete, though you could easily spend the whole day picnicking and stopping off for swims along the way. The gentle path and breathtaking scenery make it perfect for leisurely walks, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area. Whether you’re looking for a quick stroll or a day-long adventure, the walking trails at Kai Iwi Lakes offer something for everyone.
Kai Iwi Lakes offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with activities like biking, water sports, and walking. Plan your visit during the best months to enjoy pleasant weather and make the most of everything this stunning destination has to offer.
